What is Reflective Practice?

Reflective practice means making time on a regular basis to come together as a team and have space to think about our work alongside a trained and experienced facilitator.  It is often particularly helpful if this facilitator is someone external to the team and to the organisation so that they are unbiased and not involved in any team or wider dynamics.  This can help individuals within the team to feel safe to open up and be honest about their experiences, without fear of repercussion and with the added advantage of an outsider perspective.  Reflective practice enables professionals to make sense of and deal with pressurised, emotional, and stressful situations in the workplace.

Reflective practice can be defined as “active attention to knowledge and beliefs, as well as focused reflection about our experiences in relation to both ourselves and others in order to understand them more deeply and with greater awareness” (Priddis & Rogers, 2018).
